As an expatriate in Singapore, you have several options for health insurance. Understanding the differences between international and local plans helps you make the right choice for your situation.
Local Singapore Plans (MediShield Life / Integrated Shield Plans)
MediShield Life is Singapore’s national basic health insurance scheme for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) offered by local insurers like AIA, Prudential, and NTUC Income build on MediShield Life to cover private hospital treatment. However, these plans are generally not available to foreigners on work passes and do not provide global coverage.
International Health Insurance
International health insurance is designed for expatriates and globally mobile individuals. It provides continuous coverage worldwide (or in defined regions), regardless of where you are located. Plans from BUPA Global, Allianz, April International, NowHealth, and Raffles Health Insurance can cover you in Singapore, back home, and while travelling.
Which Is Right For You?
If you are a foreigner living in Singapore on an employment pass and plan to stay for more than one year, an international health plan is usually the most appropriate and practical solution. Contact us for a free assessment.
